Hockey Fights Cancer
In May of 2017, Reo Todesca (mother of Xaverian assistant coach Paul Todesca, Jr.) was diagnosed with stage 3b Non-Squamous Cell Lung Cancer. To honor her fight Paul and Xaverian Brothers High School partnered up with the Canton Ice House to host a Hockey Fights Cancer day in which both Canton High School and Xaverian would play back to back games and all proceeds would go to cancer research programs. The games were going to take place on 2/3/2018 with Reo in attendance, unfortunately, she was unable to make it and passed away on 12/28/2017. The games then became a memorial tribute to her and all others that have succumb to the awful disease.
In five years Hockey Fights Cancer has raised over $250,000 and established the Reo Todesca Memorial Foundation to honor Reo and keep her memory alive. The foundation also makes donations to help fund cancer research programs that will provide patients and families with prevention, screening, treatments and support so that more lives will be saved with the goal to “Conquer Cancer”.
2023 marks the 6th time the Canton Ice House will host Hockey Fights Cancer. This year the event will stretch over two days and will include some new additions to go along with Xaverian and Westwood High school with Curry College Men and Women and Stoughton HS Girls participating this year. Curry College will kick things off on Friday, February 3rd as they take on Salve Regina. Then it’s a full slate on Saturday, February 4th with four games in a row. Stoughton Girls take on Old Rochester at 1:00pm, Curry College Women take on UNE at 3:00pm, Xaverian will take on St. John’s Prep at 5:10pm in a rematch of last year's Division 1 State Championship and to close the night Westwood will challenge Medfield at 7:10pm.
